Bristol is the largest city in the West of England, offering a lovely Cathedral, the magnificent SS Great Britain and the Matthew, both moored in the floating harbour within 5 minutes walking of the greenhouse.

Bristol has a complex history, having developed its wealth from the trading goods (wine, tobacco and slaves) imported and exported through its harbour.

In modern times, Rolls Royce Aero Engines and British Aerospace have built their factories in the city.

Nowadays, Bristol boasts two fine universities, one of the best veterinary colleges in the country, a teaching hospital and a very good art school, so it is a young and vibrant city. The growth of the new media industries in the last 15 years has added further to this dynamic culture.

Socially, be it traditional jazz, theatre, cinema, live music or clubs, Bristol offers both quality and diversity. In addition to the great night life it has some of the best restaurants in the West Country.

Bristol is an ideal place to stay and explore the surrounding countryside.
